Positive Lightning Activity during an Intense Derecho
نویسندگان
چکیده
A derecho is an extratropical mesoscale convective system (MCS) that produces damaging winds from a series of downbursts. On 4 July 1999, a severe derecho caused extensive damage to forested regions along the United States/Canada border, west of Lake Superior. There were 665,000 acres of forest destroyed in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in Minnesota and Quetico Provincial Park in Canada, with approximately 12.5 million trees blown down. This storm resulted in additional severe weather (hail, wind and tornados) before and after the occurrence of the derecho, with continuous cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning occurring for more than 34 hours during its path across North America. At the time of the derecho the percentage of positive cloud-to-ground (+CG) lightning measured by the Canadian Lightning Detection Network (CLDN) was greater than 70% for more than three hours, with peak values reaching 97% positive CG lightning. Such high ratios of +CG are rare, and may be useful indicators for short-term forecasts of severe weather (Price and Murphy, 2002).

Letter to the Editor Intense oceanic lightning
The electrodynamic properties of intense oceanic lightning discharges are compared to intense continental lightning discharges. Particularly intense negative lightning discharges with absolute charge moments > 2 kC·km occur more often over the oceans than over the continents during April 1998. Intense continental lightning discharges, with negative and positive polarity, and intense positive oc...

متن کاملPolarity and energetics of inner core lightning in three intense North Atlantic hurricanes
[1] We use the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN), low‐frequency magnetic fields measured at Duke University, and storm intensity data (winds and central pressure) to examine the polarity and energetics of lightning within 100 km of the centers (inner core regions) of North Atlantic hurricanes Emily, Katrina, and Rita (2005). WWLLN provides the lightning locations. Polarities, peak c...
متن کاملCloud-to-ground Lightning Characteristics of Derecho-producing Convective Systems in the Central and Southern Great Plains
The scientific literature is voluminous with respect to the cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning and electrical characteristics of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs). MacGorman and Morgenstern (1998) define an MCS as a long-lived storm system that amalgamates from a group of smaller storms through interactions with the local environment. One of the more common types of MCS is the squall line, which ...
متن کاملLong-lasting D-region ionospheric modifications, caused by intense lightning in association with elve and sprite pairs
[1] Observations show that intense +CG lightning discharges which trigger both an elve and a sprite are associated with long-lasting conductivity modifications in the upper D-region ionosphere. They are observed as strong perturbations in VLF signals propagating through the disturbed region, manifested as LOng Recovery Early VLF events (LORE), which can last up to 30 minutes. These same ionosph...
